School Mass 2014/2015
On Thursday, the 11th of September, we held our school Mass to celebrate the beginning of another academic year. Father Des celebrated the mass. The yearly Mass is possibly the only time in the school year when all the children in the school come together to celebrate Mass together. We decided to celebrate it outside as it was such a beautiful day. It was lovely also to see some parents who showed up to celebrate with us.

The team worked tirelessly throughout the year and their victory was well deserved.

They also designed the sponsorship cards. The Refreshment Committee wrote letters to various shops in the area asking for sponsorship of fruit and water. They also organizing treats for the day of the event. The Road Closure Committee wrote a letter to the Bawnmore Road householders to explain to them that we were closing the road. They also spoke to the gardai about closing the road.
The race took place on Friday 4th of April and was a huge success.
Bawnmore National School participated in the School’s Debating Competition this year for the first time in recent history. 6th Class had been lucky enough to have been involved in Debating Workshops since October through an initiative with Galway Education Centre and had really enjoyed learning the skills of debating and growing in confidence. We had many ‘in house’ debates, including one for 3rd, 4th and 5th Class and each child in 6th Class had an opportunity to debate for an audience. They were all excellent!
In January, the school’s competition began and a school team of three, as well as three subs were chosen. Everyone agreed that this was difficult to do as there was so much talent in the class! Our first debate was in St. Patrick’s School, Tuam where we debated the motion ‘History is an important subject in school’ against St. Pat’s. We were proposing the motion. It was a great debate and we were delighted to come out on top.
The next step was a debate against Oranmore Girls’ School on the motion ‘Money spent on space exploration is money wasted’. This time we were opposing the motion. The debate was of a very high standard but again, Bawnmore won!
The next step was the Semi-final which took place on Friday 7th February. Pr 6th Class travelled to the Galway Education Centre to watch the Semi-Finals of the Primary Debating Competition. Our excellent team were debating against Lisheenkyle on the motion ‘Global Warming is not my Problem’. The library in the Education Centre was full as the debate began and the standard was excellent. The motion was passed and Lisheenkyle progressed to the the next stage. Everyone agreed that Bawnmore had debated excellently and were particularly impressive given that it was our first year entering.
The three members of the team; Kaitlin Kearney, Adam Heneghan and Grace Fahy were presented with medals. We are very proud of them!

Children in 5th and 6th Class were treated to a great surprise when scientists from NUIG visited as part of the Fanstastic DNA programme! Children learned how to isolate the DNA of a banana and built up various forms of DNA using models. Everyone really enjoyed the experience and the scientists have promised that they will make a return trip to the school in the future!
Science Festival
Discovery Science. Building a lighthouse. 3/10/2011
On the 29th of September we were doing a project on electricity. We were making a lighthouse. Our method was ……..
No 1: Gather items. Our items were: a kitchen roll tube, see – through yoghurt carton, on small bulb, battery, four wires, sellotape, paint, (black and white), bulb holder and battery holder.
No 2: Attach your bulb to the holder.
No 3: Then put your battery into the battery holder.
No 4: Attach the wires into pairs
No 5: Then attach the pairs to the pairs to different sides of the battery holder. Hopefully it will light up!
No 6: If it lit up, put your battery on a flat surface and hold your light up in the air. (Straight up!)
No 7: Then get your tube. Place it on top or you battery with the light and cables going through.
No 8: Sellotape the tube to the battery. (Which does not fit into the tube?)
No 9: Get your yoghurt pot and place it on top. (Make sure your light bulb is straight.) Then when you know everything is straight sellotape your yoghurt to the tube.
No 10: Finally, get a shoe box and cut a hole (so, the lighthouse will slot in) and place the lighthouse inside! Decorate it with papier- mache.
Enjoy!

Today we visited the garden. We were not surprised to see our plants completely overgrown by weeds because it was left over the summer. There were a lot of pea pods. We picked some peas and ate them. They were not fully ripe. The tomatoes looked like massive peas. They were not ripe because they didn’t get enough sun. The marrows turned out good. The rocket went out of control. Some of it got eaten by slugs. The cauliflower was under-developed. The lettuce and cabbage didn`t grow very well because it got eaten by slugs. The onions grew very well; they were probably the best along side the “potatoes”. The potatoes grew excellently and on our next visit to the garden we can harvest them. Our three herbs did really well. They were sage tricolour, marjoram and thyme. There was a plant in the herb box that we could not identify. The strawberries did not grow due to lack of sunlight, just like the tomatoes. We think most of the plants did not grow well due to lack of sunlight. Met Éireann said it was the coldest summer in fifty years. By Jack & Kevin 6th Class 6/09/2011
